2nd Quarter Performance Review: Sales Vs. Expenses Vs. Account Receivables

I'd like to take this opportunity to review my performance as a technically General Manager of our company. Only a few of my plans before I joined HPIE were put into practice since I found out that the company has different needs.

I was successful in editing our company logo,  our company portfolio and profile. I had polo shirts printed our for a more professional look. (but I still have no business card at this time).
I made different forms to monitor employees like employee daily log sheet, payroll forms and materials/equipment request forms, because it was previously written on scratch papers and log books only.

As for plans that I failed to execute 100%, I wanted to generate new accounts for HPIE but then my Dad is not aggressive enough to support me. Also, the accreditation requirements are very meticulous and I have to improve first internal operations before I set out and sail into the ocean of unknown.

That's me and our Secretary, Juvy

For a starter, I did quite great to be able to tap Atlas Mining Company, Pepsi-Cola Products (the manufacturing plant), DMCI and EEI Corporation. But my dad placed on hold my pursuit for new accounts for some internal reasons. Oh well.

I remember what I learned from College, that it will be more expensive to look for new accounts than to increase the percentage of sales from current accounts. So that's my master plan for this year, increase by 20% our sales from existing accounts.

Now, I have to review sales and expenses for the 2nd quarter and think about ways on how to improve them. Also I need to consider collections because it doesn't matter that we sent out millions of invoices but they remained uncollected, wala rin technically lugi parin.

Gosh! After plotting our sales and expenses, I found out na drastic and increase ng expenses pag upo ko! hahaha! hindi naman sa magastos ako, one factor is that Daddy includes his expenses with his family sa mga receipts, lumalabas tuloy na mas malaki pa ang mga operating expense (kain-kain sa labas) kaysa sa mga expense for raw materials. Also, we are diligent now in paying our taxes so mas malaki talaga ang expenses.

Grabe talaga ang taxes and BIR, ayoko sana sa susunod na update ko magdedeclare na ako ng bankruptcy dahil wala na akong pambayad utang dahil sa laki ng binabayaran sa BIR.

Improvements in Sales and Marketing

Well I would have to say that we are efficient now in sending quotations and responding to client complaints since I am very techy (unlike our secretary and project engineers). After ng complaint, may response agad and I make sure to pressure the person in charge to immediately solve the concern.

So far, positive feedback naman, may ilang purchasing officers lang na naartehan sakin kasi lagi daw ako nag-eemail. Halatang mga hindi sanay sa mga ISO certified operations eh. (yabang) na dapat lahat well documented.

I also had the chance to attend suppliers meeting with Japanese folks (clients) and I made sure to wow them with my reporting.

Stopped attending my Masters

Okay so I was supposed to shift from MS Marketing to MBA this term but then apparently, I still lack experience according to the course coordinator. So I didn't pushed my luck. Bahala na, sobrang busy naman, baka next term nalang so that I have more time preparing my certificates of employment to prove that I have been working for 3 years now. Yoko na ikwento sobrang badtrip moment yang experience ko while shifting in La Salle. Pag ako nabadtrip mag-eenroll ako sa Ateneo or UP.

4 months and counting: GM in the Making

So I made a life changing decision last April, to join my dad in his Industrial Engineering firm and so far so good, all is doing well.

Well not as in WELL-WELL.. I had some serious ups and downs with Bureau of Internal Revenue and some serious concerns with employees but this is what a General Manager faces... its a training ground for me and these types of problems will be my companion for quite some time...

Oh well, I have not been practicing my Sales and Marketing background for so long.  Would you like to guess what my main function is in our company? Yes a hint above will tell you that I am actually handling Finance, Accounting and Human Resources!

Aside from keeping the monthly sales and expenses and report them to our freelance accountant for tax filing, I prepare cash/check vouchers, follow up on delinquent accounts and well, I sign checks on the side. Since we're a small firm, I kinda do all tasks here in the office.

The month of July was a bit challenging for me, since our Secretary had to take a month long sick leave because she had an ectopic pregnancy. So just imagine what my functions were, I did the Sales, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and HR functions in the office.

Just imagine if we had monthly targets and quota, I'd probably gone ballistic since I was a one woman team last July.

Hmmm, but targets are good to keep people moving and the company growing... I will review that and propose that to my dad....

Yes!! You are reading a blog post of a future CEO :)

Yes you read it right! don't think that I'm just bragging here, I'm just using the power of words and thoughts to bring we where I want to be and that's on top of the ladder. Not just any other ladder.

Today, March 15 I tendered my resignation as an Online News Researcher/Editor of Smart Brief (hey, you gotta subscribe here men!) to FINALLY join my dad's company, Hi-Performance Industrial Engineering ( I thought of the name!)

I am really oozing with happiness as my dad finally gave me "the talk" and asked me to work for him!!! If you would remember, I have been contemplating about joining the company for so long but I dont have the guts then to do it.

It has been 3 weeks for me and I knew I had to pull myself out of my current company because I suddenly felt the a voice that is asking me to go out and make a sale! hahaha! maybe I was born to do sales after all?

I am so excited to lead our 30-or-so-manned-company specifically its Sales & Marketing team (comprised of my dad, a secretary and two engineers) bwahahahah! small scale sobra diba?

Believe me I'm gonna make our company grow! I am close to my dream of earning my first P1Million while I'm still 25 years old!

I am giving myself a sales quota for the year, P10M and I'm gonna ask for a P1 million commission! bwahahahha!

I am sooo positive about this I think I am actually attracting dust while I am typing this for all the static electricity I am exerting! haha!

As for my first project, revamping the image for the business cards and company profile. I made several logos but forgive me for not knowing how to use Photoshop. Help, anyone?

the first one looks like Miami Heat, second one, like a fake harry potter H and the third one, i dont know.. hahaha! i just like how the colors went well together?!  thoughts anyone?

from Master in Marketing to MBA: What to do?

and yes I am very very busy and i thank GOD I finally had a day off for myself. After a few minutes reading tweets and lounging at Facebook. I got tired so I decided to update my Jobstreet and JobsDB account instead.

Specifically updated my highest educational attainment from Bachelor's Degree to Master's Degree.

Im proud of myself! Things are pretty hard in Graduate School especially in De La Salle, where the academic calendar is Trimestral. Every lesson is taught fast, like for instance it was just our third meeting in Statistics class and we were discussing Chapter 7-9 of the book already! Its hard to keep up especially if you have a full time work. I have three subjects (9 units) this term and next term, I will just take 6 units so I can have a day off each week. Each subject is very demanding, with case studies and a lot of readings required so I'd be better with two subjects next term. Oh well.

Speaking of next term, I am highly contemplating on shifting from MS in Marketing to Master of Business Administration (MBA).

I dont know, its just that MS Marketing is too specific for me and I guess it is aimed more on those practicing Marketing Management in their fields.

I am an Online News Researcher and though I participate greatly in class, I just cant seem to fit myself among my classmates in MSM. But will i fit in an MBA class, where my classmates are mostly MANAGERS in their own respective fields?

Well maybe... because I am actually the soon to be General Manager of our humble rubber manufacturing firm.

Upon contemplating I realized why have I been running away all my life from a destiny clearly laid out unto me. My dad is 63 years old.. Pretty soon he's gonna retire and who else will take over our company?

I am soo proud of my dad coz even though he was just a HS graduate, he was able to send me (and my illegit siblings for that matter) to school. He dreamt of a simple life, a family of his own, his own car, and to have a life with no boss and no time constraints.

Entrepreneurship is the way to go. I have the business, I have the physical assets, I have the human resource. I just dont have the guts to manage the company yet (or to go on training under my dad).

Maybe MBA will equip me the much needed confidence to make a giant leap for my career and take the risk of not being employed but to run my own company.

What to do?

Am I ready for a home-based work?

Things have been great for me for the past nine days of 2012!

Careerwise, I got interviewed by Remotestaff.ph and luckily, I passed the initial interview via Skype. But since its a home-based job, I was deeply contemplating if I was indeed, ready to work from home...

The interview went well. You just have to create an account in their website, fill in the personal details and upload sample work and a voice resume (for them to gauge your English speaking skills).

You know, aside from giving up an opportunity for promotion and having physical interaction with real human beings in the work setting aka having a social life, you will also have to battle the temptation of lying to bed, watching tv and updating facebook/twitter feeds. Remotestaff.ph is a great company that offers great pay, day-time job but for jobseekers, be sure you are ready to commit to them because:

1. as an employee, you will log-in into their system, allowing them to monitor the websites and tasks you are doing on your computer

2. they are not liable for any tax, SSS, HMO and Pag-ibig deduction.

The great thing about working at home is your transportation and meals expenses may go done drastically therefore it enables you to save your time and money.

I prayed hard to God to help me decide whether to pursue this or not and HE answered me immediately. On the same day, I was offered by my boss to move into another exciting project, to research for web content for the daily e-newsletter sent out to the international spa community.

So I placed on hold my application with Remotestaff.ph until I get the hang of my new project with my current employer.

I have a number of friends working from home and it suits them well, but for me I think I still have a lot to offer to the corporate world!

The No-Make-Up Look Experiment

Since I attended an all-girls college, we are actually required to put on make-up to look presentable at all times. After the holidays, I decided to try out an experiment, though unintentionally. Its to go to work without/with minimal make up on.

I have been sporting the minimal make-up look for the past two weeks and what I notice is that people started noticing "my other assets."

We often read that cosmetics are used to accentuate your best assets but I think, since it has been years since Ive gone out make-up less, people may have thought that is my normal face/look. My assets, instead of being accentuated, were concealed by my make-up.

I used to get compliments like, "i love your eye liner" or "where did you buy your lipstick, the shade is a trend now" but now the most unusual comments I receive from complete strangers include, "your eyes are pretty" (imagine i dont use concealers for my puffy eyebag). A friend of mine also commented "Iba ang ganda mo ngayon ha! (your beauty seems to be different now ah!). I got the most unusual comments of all time from a female co-worker, "ang sexy mo ngayon!" imagine that?! they started noticing my other assets!

Me with make-up on (with Jed my boyfriend and Jasmine, my niece)

Me, Au Naturalle

Hahahah! But oh well, I want to know what works for you and when do you feel most noticeable, with or without makeup?
