New Year Resolution: Focus Rather Than Multitask

Happy New Year!

Things have worked out pretty well for me! We held our first successful Christmas Party at work, which pictures can be seen at our Facebook Page. I've met several big clients the past months and have well implemented a lot to improve organization of our company. On the sides, I finished my 3-month Jazzfunk and Hiphop classes. I have been doing admin/online work gangnam style, in short.

But really, I am writing because I finally had the chance to update my blog because I followed the only rule in finishing tasks quickly: focus instead of multitasking.

Having worked as an Assistant General Manager for our company whilst working as an Online Content Merchandiser (work from home) made master the skill of multi-tasking but after months of doing it, I realized it is more of a hindrance rather than a technique.

To quote an article that appeared in The New Atlantis: A Journal of Technology and Society:
In modern times, hurry, bustle, and agitation have become a regular way of life for many people — so much so that we have embraced a word to describe our efforts to respond to the many pressing demands on our time: multitasking. Used for decades to describe the parallel processing abilities of computers, multitasking is now shorthand for the human attempt to do simultaneously as many things as possible, as quickly as possible, preferably marshalling the power of as many technologies as possible. (Christine Rosen, The Myth of Multitasking, 2008)
Since I decided to take in another full time work, I told myself that I can do this since I am a woman and a master of accomplishing things all at the same time. But then I found myself stressed out and missing out some important points because I lack focus. As the picture above states: Multitasking-screwing up several things at once. Here's a great blog post from Dean Somerset on why multi-tasking never works.

So my 2013 New Year's resolution is to focus on one task a time.

I made a strict schedule for my work:

Mondays thru Fridays
9am-12nn - Online Content Merchandise Work
1pm - 4pm - All admin work, fieldwork and other demands of Asst. GM
5pm - 10pm (which usually runs till 11 or 12am) - Online Content Merchandise Work

Saturdays - Whole day Accounting and HR Admin work for HPIE

Sundays - Praise and Worship and Malling with Hubby

I usually sleep 12mn or 1am since I browse the net and update my social networking sites nightly :)

At times like this, I don't miss days of spontaneity because it messes my schedule which leaves a lot of things undone so I plan and book every weekends with different activities to keep my life fun and interesting.

Trust me, it is very effective to focus on single tasks rather than juggling all of them all at the same time with the goal of trying to finish ahead of time. Really, multitasking is a time waster and for the new year, this is the best time to leave old methods behind!

Goodluck!
